We are British Ex-Pats, Alan & Sue McGuire, who abandoned Leicestershire and settled in France in 2001, deciding to live in the Auvergne, at the heart of the Massif Central. A decision we have not regretted. The Auvergne rises to a maximum of 1890 metres but the average home and most villages lie at around 400. The air is clean and sweet, the seasons are well defined in that winters are cold and can be harsh, spring bursts with wild flowers and sweet smells, summer is typically south of France, blue skies but temperatures rarely rise above 35 because of the altitude. Strong winds or low cloud cover, which, often creates a damp unpleasant environment, which mars the foregoing idyll but an idyllic climate does not exist, even in the Auvergne. The Auvergne is not for jet-setters, disco-going nightlife seekers, this is rural France. If you want a calm and peaceful life amongst very friendly and helpful neighbours, enjoy outdoor sports and pursuits and above all want to breathe real fresh air then the Auvergne could be for you. The Auvergnats are reputed to be reluctant to dispose of their property for fear that their neighbours will suspect a shortage of finances, the result is that they hold possession for many years and the properties fall into disrepair. The French in general are only slowly moving toward a D.I.Y culture so there are still some potential dream homes available at comparatively low prices. That’s where HCF can help.
